Release students from the restraints of the classroom with school travel

A student's time at school is important because it is the stage in their life where they are able to try a variety of different things and discover what they like, what they are good at and what kind of career they want to pursue in the future. It's also a good time for them to work of their life skills such as teamwork and independence.

Whilst most of the time students spend at school will be spent in class, it's important to remember that there are things students need to gain from their school life which cannot be taught in the restraints of the classroom. They need to be able to see and discover new things in order to gain inspiration and to become curious about the world, and the best way to allow them to do this is to take them on a trip.

School Travel
School trips are beneficial to students in many ways, but school travel abroad can provide things which local trips cannot. Firstly, students will be able to explore a different culture and learn more about people who live differently from them, making them more open-minded about the world and accepting of different people. Secondly, students will be encouraged to develop a taste for travel, giving them the opportunity to live a more exciting and interesting life in the future. Plus, for language students, trips abroad will give them the real-life practice they need to become confident with the language.

However, you do not need to take students far to give them lots of benefits they cannot get from the classroom. School travel allows students to learn independently in the way they find easiest. Some students will find it easier to learn by listening and watching, which makes classroom learning ideal for them, whilst other will learn more easily by trying things for themselves. School trips meet the needs of all students and allow them to take in more information whilst having fun.

Assessing the varied school travel options available to teachers and students

Education doesn’t always have to be boring. School trips can make learning fun and interesting, as well as giving students the opportunity to visit somewhere new. A hands-on experience often sticks in your mind more than learning from a text book and can therefore improve memory of certain topics.

Travel is an important part of any student’s learning experience, regardless of age. Trips are often organised in primary school, such as to army camps, leisure centres, theme parks or even abroad. As well as allowing children to experience something new, it can help to create stronger bonds between the students and even get to see their teachers in a fun light. Some trips may simply be for recreational purposes whilst others may be for educational reasons.

Many trips are often taken abroad, particularly in Europe. This is great if certain children have never experienced visiting other countries, as travelling with a school is often much cheaper. Those studying languages in particular may benefit from experiencing the culture first hand within that country. They also get to practise their listening, reading and speaking skills in real life situations, which can help to boost confidence and also memory.

School travel to France, Germany and Spain are quite common for secondary schools. A trip to France can even be done in one day, via the Eurostar or ferry. Travelling by coach is very cheap once broken down to cost per student. Paris is a popular destination as there is a lot to see and do. A visit to the Eiffel Tower and other attractions such as Disneyland are common, as well as visiting local shops, cafes, museums and restaurants.

School trips benefit both students and teachers

When students are sitting in class there is often a mix of people who are interested in the subject and people who have no interest whatsoever. Students who are not interested in a subject will find it hard to concentrate in lessons, as the classroom environment is far from exciting, and is also often a stressful place for young people.

There are ways, however, of helping students to take an interest in subjects and to make it easier for them to take in information. Taking students on trips, for example, is a great way of helping them to learn more about a subject whilst allowing them to explore the parts they find the most interesting. This contrasts with the classroom environment where students are all forced to learn the same thing.

There are many benefits to taking students on school trips. In the classroom, students have a very repetitive routine so it can be hard for them to remember the things they have learnt. However, on a school trip, students will be able to have fun and create lots of memories, which will help them to remember the things they learnt at the time. Student's minds are a lot more relaxed when they are given a change of environment, so they will also be able to absorb much more information. They probably wont even be aware of the fact that they are learning if they are busy enjoying themselves.

School trips can also be helpful for teachers. There are three different types of learners: those who learn by seeing, those who learn by listening and those who learn by doing. Students who learn by doing will have their needs met much more effectively on a trip, and because they are able to learn in their own way, teachers will be able to observe how their students like to learn and address this back in the classroom to make their lessons more effective.
